CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: Celebrating Issue Number 25 of Interstices: Journal of Architecture and Related Arts
Interstices: Journal of Architecture and Related Arts is pleased to call for abstracts for its 25th issue, “Silver,” celebrating what we are thinking of as a significant anniversary. Since its inception in 1991, the journal has been a platform for architectural discourse, fostering critical engagement and scholarly exchange. The anniversary offers an opportunity to reflect on the journal’s evolution, its impact on architectural thought, and the diverse contributions that have shaped its trajectory.
In its formative years, Interstices was edited by Ross Jenner and Nigel Ryan, emerging from a broader theoretical movement within the University of Auckland’s School of Architecture during the 1980s. The inaugural issue developed out of the “Under Construction” seminar series, which facilitated the exchange of ideas among participants. Key contributors included Mike Austin, Peter Bartlett, Chris Barton, Mike Linzey, Chris Orsman, Sarah Treadwell, Paul Walker, and Mark Wigley. These individuals, some as staff and others as postgraduate students and sessional teachers, played pivotal roles in shaping the journal’s early direction.
The journal took a significant turn in 2005 when Tina Engels-Schwarzpaul revitalised it, establishing an annual publication schedule. This revitalisation was achieved through a collaborative effort between the University of Auckland’s School of Architecture and Planning and the Auckland University of Technology’s School of Art and Design. This partnership broadened the journal’s scope, incorporating a wider range of perspectives and disciplines.
As the journal celebrates its 25th anniversary, it stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts of its contributors and the evolving landscape of architectural thought. The diverse range of authors who have contributed to Interstices over the years reflects the journal’s dedication to exploring the interstices—the spaces between ideas and their realisation—in architecture and related arts.
